The foundation Vaba Lava, directly translated as free stage, was founded in May 2010, by 9 independent theatre and dance companies with two aims: firstly to provide opportunities for independent companies in Estonia and secondly to promote international cooperation organizing joint projects, co-productions, workshops and seminars. Vaba Lava is the first theatre centre without a resident company in Estonia. Every two years it has a different team of curators: an international curator and an Estonian assistant curator who select the productions for the curator’s program. The logo depicting broken chains in the symbolic colour of Mayakovskyan red plus the poster-like graphics present a clear idea of the revolutionary creative spirit housed in this building.
